Three Good Reasons to Choose Optimum Nutrition's Best Whey Protein

A look at what sets ON's Gold Standard whey protein apart from the competition.

One of the most fundamental and necessary supplements for athletes, particularly those who do not consume sufficient protein in their daily diet, is whey protein. Although there are some benefits of whey protein over other types of protein supplements, we are not going to discuss those here.

One of the most well-liked whey protein products will be the focus of this post, along with a look at some of the main reasons why. The brand name is "Gold Standard," and Optimum Nutrition (ON) is the company that makes it: a business that makes sports nutrition and has its headquarters in Illinois, USA.

Although many brands of whey protein are of high quality, some minor details may make a big difference for some customers. Let's look at three of the main reasons why ON's Gold Standard is better than many other products of its kind.

1. It's Pure Protein

The formula is quite straightforward. Whey peptides, whey protein concentrate, and whey protein isolate are the main components of the protein blend.

Due to the fact that it contains at least 90% protein by weight, whey protein isolate is the purest form. The concentrate has less processing than the isolate, and it only has about 80% protein by weight. The remaining 20% of the concentrate is made up of fats, milk sugar (lactose), and other nutrients that come from milk. Peptides are simple for the body to absorb because they are short chains of amino acids.

There are no unused fillers in this 100% whey protein powder. However, there are a few secondary components, such as: flavors, both natural and artificial, soy lecithin, salt, acesulfame potassium, an artificial sweetener, sucralose, and lactase, a digestive enzyme that breaks down lactose, are all present.

NOTE: The ingredients may slightly differ between flavors.

24 grams of protein, 5.5 grams of BCAAs, and 4 grams of glutamine and glutamic acid are included in each 30-gram serving.

It has 3–5 grams of carbs per serving (varies depending on the flavor).

2. It Mixes Well

When mixed with water or another liquid, most whey protein powders tend to clump together and not dissolve well, which is a common problem.

Because it uses instantized powder, Gold Standard mixes immediately. This is accomplished by incorporating soy-derived lecithin, also known as an emulsifier or instantizing agent, into the formulation.

When compared to other powders, the powder rarely forms clumps and easily mixes and dissolves in milk, water, and other liquids.

3. No Gas Or Bloating

Whey protein is made from milk, and regardless of how pure or filtered it is, it must contain lactose, the sugar in milk. While the concentrate has a higher percentage of lactose, the isolate has the lowest amount.

Lactose may cause gas, bloating, and discomfort in the gastrointestinal tract in some individuals who are sensitive to it. Some consumers may have difficulty finding a product that works for them because even the tiniest amounts of lactose can cause issues.

People who are lactose intolerant can reduce or even completely avoid the negative effects of lactose by adding lactase to the formula. The primary function of the digestive enzyme lactase is to break down lactose.

Even though ON's Gold Standard whey protein is less likely to cause gas and bloating than other brands, I did notice a few user complaints that it did make them feel bloated. The majority of users do not experience any adverse effects, though it is unclear whether this is due to some of the other ingredients or simply did not work for them.

Orginial 100% Whey vs. 100% Isolate Formula

There are two flavors of ON Gold Standard whey protein powder: the 100% isolate and the original 100% whey.

A combination of the isolate, concentrate, and peptides made up the original formulation. There is only whey isolate in the isolate formula. Although this varies from product to product, the nutritional profile of the two formulations is virtually identical. Some assert that the isolate is of higher quality due to its higher protein content.

24 grams of protein, or 80% by weight, are contained in a 30-gram serving of the original 100% whey formula.

The 100% isolate formula has a protein content of 83% by weight in one serving (about 30 grams), which contains 25 grams of protein.

Each serving contains 5.5 grams of BCAAs.

In terms of carbohydrates, each serving of the isolate has 1 gram, whereas the original formula has 3 to 5 grams (depending on the flavor).

As can be seen, the nutritional profile of the two formulations is nearly the same, but their prices are very different. A 5 lbs. The original formula costs about $60 for a tub with 71 servings, while a 2.91 lb. The isolate costs about $52 for a tub that contains 44 servings.

It doesn't make sense to spend more money on the isolate when there is only one extra gram of protein in each serving. Buy the original 100% whey formula instead to save money!

Which Flavor Is Best

There are more than twenty different flavors of this product. The most well-known and classic flavor is Double Rich Chocolate. It doesn't have the rich chocolate flavor that the name implies, but it tastes more like cocoa powder, which is one of the ingredients. Additionally, it lacks sweetness and has a slightly bitter flavor similar to that of dark chocolate. This shake is good if you don't like shakes with a lot of sugar.

The flavor is acceptable when mixed with water alone, but it is not particularly exciting or interesting. Combine it with the milk of your choice to create a more flavorful shake; rice, soy, almond, etc. Keep in mind that the majority of 5-star reviews that praise the excellent taste actually make use of milk rather than just water.

One of my favorite shake recipes is as follows:

*1 cup of vanilla-flavored almond milk

*1 teaspoon of peanut butter

*1 tablespoon (optional) honey or another sweetener

*1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (the flavor is delicious and has many health benefits

  for me).

*Two ice cubes

*Protein powder (double-rich chocolate) in a scoop.

Extreme Milk Chocolate is your best bet if you're looking for a sweeter flavor.

The flavor of Vanilla Ice Cream is also quite sweet. It tastes great with a fruity shake made with milk, strawberries, or bananas.

Mocha Cappuccino is a great addition to the lineup. For a delicious and nutritious cup of coffee, combine it with a spoonful of coconut oil and a cup of hot coffee.

Conclusion

In general, this is one of the best and most affordable whey protein powders available. However, I would not call it unique or "superior" to other products, as some might suggest. You won't notice any difference in gains using this product over any other brand's protein, and there is no superior whey protein.
